We recently saw a Facebook ad post promoting malicious software masquerading as a “AI Account Verifier” tool. The file is compressed into a 19MB zip file, but upon extraction, its true size is revealed to be a whopping 721MB. This is a deliberate strategy used by hackers to avoid detection by antivirus software.

While negative headlines may catch your attention, our goal is to keep you informed and safe without instilling fear in you. Here’s what you need to know to stay safe:

  1. Be wary of Facebook ads that purport to be account verifiers or other tools that necessitate the download of a file. Cybercriminals frequently use social media platforms to distribute malicious software, so be cautious when clicking on links or downloading files from social media.
  2. Do not download a file if you suspect it is malicious. These malware files, like the one we mentioned earlier, are frequently in the form of zip files. Be wary of any files that you did not expect or that come from unknown sources.
  3. Check that your antivirus software is up to date and operational. Antivirus software can assist in detecting and removing malware from your computer, so it is critical to keep it up to date and operational at all times.
  4. Back up your important files on a regular basis. Backing up your files can protect you from data loss caused by malware or other types of cyberattacks. In addition to these tips, we also recommend that you report any suspicious Facebook ads to the platform, and avoid engaging with or clicking on any suspicious links or ads. Let’s work together to stay one step ahead of these cybercriminals and keep our devices and data safe.

If you see any suspicious files floating around the internet, please report them to us. You can send an email to report@arstletech.com or thru our Facebook page.
